on our way to Children's
sleeping on the Bili Bed
her sad IV in her arm
Kaylie has been dealing with jaundice and high bilirubin levels since we came home from the hospital, and over the weekend it got a bit worse. (Jaundice is quite common in babies, and the symptoms are sleepiness, lack of wanting to nurse, and orange skin) We had to take her to the ER at Children's on Sunday, where they also treated her for dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Luckily, her bilirubin count was low enough we could take her home and not need to stay overnight! There's no medication for jaundice, just to wake her up and make her eat; and to have her in the sunlight which breaks down the bilirubin. Today's doctor's appointment shows she is slowly continuing to gain weight, and her levels are steadily getting lower. Hooray!
One thing I've learned through all this is how sick Kyle really was when he was born- he had jaundice too, and his first bilirubin levels were a 24. I noticed on the chart yesterday that 25 is the highest the chart goes, with anything between 20-25 being the "red zone" and treatment was described as "crash-cart intervention". I'm glad I didn't know that at the time we dealt with it for him. God is good, he's taken good care of all my children and I am so thankful!
