Our Trip to the Free Aquarium

Saturday we visited the aquarium at Redondo- it's part of the Highline Community College's marine biology program. It's free (woohoo!) and is for learning (hooray- education!) and it's small. (oh.) We took our time exploring and it took maybe forty minutes to do so. Like I said, it's small.

Kaylie posing- "Cheeeeeese!" Notice she's got her hands in her pockets. She loves pockets.

It's hard to tell from the reflection, but towards the left there is a two legged sea star. he looks like a boomergang. We learned that a. seastars eat other seastars b. this guy lost all of his other legs in just one night (the other guy must have been hungry. or bored.) and c. legs grow back! they are tiny little stumps right now and someday he will back to normal.

escape seastar! run for your life!!!

The students taught these seastars to flip over to be fed. You put a piece of fish (or whatever that was) on the ends of one of their legs, and the tiny little feelers will make the food travel down to their stomach. A few stars learned how to just move that one leg directly to their mouth.

Karis was the brave one, and not only fed a seastar but also touched his legs too!

We keep meaning to go there. Maybe next month. Is it open every Saturday?
